Abstract	Addressed to institutional researchers, this report from California's Chabot College presents information on National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data sets. Included is a discussion on how these data sets can be used to create peer groups of U.S. colleges, and to produce statistics on major student variables for each of these groups. Ideas are presented on how to obtain and work with NCES data sets, and what resources are needed in terms of time, hardware, software, supplies, and funds. Three major chapters review the usefulness of two data sets: the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS). The conclusion summarizes the value and accessibility of these data sets, and helps institutional researchers evaluate whether they have the inclination or resources to work with either of the sets, or if published materials are better alternatives. The report contains 21 tables. The appendices contain lists of IPEDS and BPS variables used, supporting tables, and additional sources of help in using the NCES data sets. (AS)
